If you’re adding a new addition to your family, making sure your new little one’s nursery is ready to go is probably a pretty high priority. Purchasing a crib, changing table, dresser and all the cozy details are wonderful parts of celebrating your baby’s impending birth, but your nursery windows and nursery window treatments can have just as big an impact on the room as a fresh coat of paint or soft rugs underfoot. It’s important that you create a space that’s nurturing and soothing, so let’s cover some dos and don’ts for your nursery windows

Nursery Window DOs

  • DO invest in well-insulated windows. Energy-efficient windows with good insulation help your HVAC system work more efficiently, meaning cost savings on your energy bills in addition to a comfortable living space. Making sure your bundle of joy is able to rest comfortably benefits both of you, after all! When baby is sleeping well, parents can relax too. Enjoy the opportunity to take a breather while you have one.
  • DO buy layered nursery window treatments. Blackout curtains that give total, soothing darkness (except for a nightlight, if you choose) for better rest are a good idea, but lining those with sheer curtains or blinds is a good idea.
  • DO think of window seating options — and not just custom built-ins! While built-in window seats are a comfortable, luxurious touch to a large window, you can DIY your way to a beautiful window seat too. If a built-in window seat isn’t an option, a cushioned bench and some bookshelves can add a custom touch without the bigger budget.

Nursery Windows DON’Ts

  • DON’T use single-pane windows in a nursery. Single-pane windows do not provide adequate insulation against the cool and heat outside. If you live in an older home or have not considered upgrading older windows, it could be time to take a look at your windows and doors. If they’re not holding up to the temperatures outside, it could impact your energy bills, too. Double-pane windows are energy-efficient and keep your home comfortable.
  • DON’T leave your window locks up to chance. Before your baby becomes a curious toddler, check how your nursery windows open and lock. If they’re remotely within reach of a small child’s roaming hands, it’s time to get some childproof locks.
  • DON’T be afraid to go big. A custom window or series of casement windows make a big statement and encourage hours of daydreaming over the beautiful outdoors for your little one. If you’ve got a lovely view outdoors, make sure your child can enjoy it as well!
